Across The Tracks

Katy coulda kept it
The baby inside was restless
But maybe the silence kept her
From taking the proper steps
It’s electric the effect of all the weight
And while she wept
Across the tracks the clinic waited
To take little Hayden’s breath
Amazed at all patients there
And pissed she overslept
Katy waited in the waiting room
And soon they got her prepped
Sitting naked on the tables where
She started to accept
The fact that taking lifes a cheaper price
Than defects and neglect
She just wanted to protect
Her relationship with Freddie
Wasn’t ready cooked spaghetti
Every night
Bellies empty
Plenty mouths to feed already
Stomach different kinda emptied
She’s mistaking scalpels for machetes
Katy wonders dazed and shaking as she’s going under
Whether Fred will flip
Give her guilt trips or be a comfort
Cause Fred don’t know
But if Freddie find out hes gonna suffer
Freddie coulda been a father
But he never meant to bother
Anyone with all his problems
He left Katy at the altar
Altered by a brew of drugs and alcohol
Freddie fell into a deep depression
That’s when Katy called
He thought that he had learned his lesson
Knew that he was wrong to break it off
She said baby why can’t we be just a bit involved
Freddie said come over Katy
You’ve been patient now I’m waiting
In my basement taping flicks
A quickie now is what I’m craving
Katy sat debating in her Chevy contemplating
Should she go or stay
Always pacing back and forth
So frustrating
Katy turned the keys and revved the engine
Now she’s racing, Heart is aching
Hole in her midsection
And now a bun in the oven baking
The sex was great but it was mating
More like procreating Katy didn’t take her pill that day
And Freddie never wore a rubber anyway
Katy’s conscience wasn’t clean
So she went to see the priest
She sat behind the screen between them
And released, spilled the beans
Her dreams are haunted by the face of Hayden
Turned into a paste
Unwanted
Taken from the womb forsaken
Satan would be pleased
As she grieved
The clergy breathed relief
And seized the moment
Gave condolence and atonement
Told her walk the path you’ve chosen
Open up your heart it can’t be broken
But I see that yours is closed and frozen
It’s not hopeless
Just go home tonight And focus
Apologize or hope the guy don’t notice
The sky outside is still not filled with locust’
And Moses aint shown up yet
So trust me when I say thet Katy this is not the lowest
You can get and if it is
Then the ascent will be a bonus
On the way home Katy took the route that was the slowest
Saw homeless lady with a baby in beat up stroller
She felt like life was over
Freddie was restless and Katy Had just sent
A text That She Needed to see him for breakfast
But it just seemed to Fred that it was cause of the necklace
She left at his place on the coffee table the last time they had sex
When he came in her navel
Then thoughts of the cradle slipped into Freddie’s head
Because he never felt more stable
Had a steady job, nice threads and even bought a used Mercury Sable
Knew that he could make enough bread to put food on the table
Build a nursery next April
Freddie opened up the door to Katy in the corner of the kitchen
Fetal position piss all over the floor
She screamed you swore to me you pulled out
I felt forced into abortion I refused to leave him orphaned
Now my body’s sore
Fred exits feeling no remorse
Clinic infection left her wrecked
Red Letters
Incorrectly labeled whore
So she told her self right then
I’ll never go across the tracks again
